IRS7). Edwards (1924) described the spectacular display by the glow-worm population in the Waitomo Caves as 'the radiance of such a massed body o f glouj-worms as cannot be found anywhere else in the u,orld. u t~er l j incalculable as 10 numbers and merging their individual lights in a nirvana of pure sheen'. treated in more recent works (Richards. 1960; Harrison. 1966: Stringer, 1967). As a result a reasonably good account of the habits and behaviour of the glow-worm now exists. A number of b~ological studies o f ihis inscct have been reported (Edwards, 1914: Harvey. 1952; Norris, 1970) and accounts of the anatomy and histology o f the larva were presented by Gatenby (1959, 1960) and Ganguly 11960) respectively. Wheeler and Williams (1915) were the first to identify the terminal ends o f each of the four Malpigllian tubules as being the source of the characteristic lumtnescent glou,. Two entomopathogenic species of the hyphomycete genus Tolypocladium are descr ibed in detail. Tolypocladium extinguens sp. nov. was found on larvae of Arachnocampa luminosa (Diptera; Mycetophil idae) in caves in New Zealand. Tolypocladium cyl indrosporum W. Gams is shown to be pathogenic to Aedes sierrensis and A. australis and is reported from Plecia nearctica (Diptera; Bibionidae). The occurr...

Two new species of harvestmen (Opiliones, Eupnoi, Neopilionidae) from Waitomo, New Zealand

TWO NEW SPECIES OF HARVESTMAN (OPILIONES Neopilionidae: Enantiobuninae) are described from the Waitomo region of the North Island, New Zealand, Forsteropsalis bona sp. n. and F. photophaga sp. n. Both have been collected within caves in the region, where predation on glow-worms Arachnocampa luminosa has been previously recorded for one or both species (misidentified as 'Megalopsalis tumida'). H...

Distribution and phylogenetic relationships of Australian glow-worms Arachnocampa (Diptera, Keroplatidae).

Glow-worms are bioluminescent fly larvae (Order Diptera, genus Arachnocampa) found only in Australia and New Zealand. Their core habitat is rainforest gullies and wet caves. Eight species are present in Australia; five of them have been recently described. The geographic distribution of species in Australia encompasses the montane regions of the eastern Australian coastline from the Wet Tropics...

Characterization of the Fishing Lines in Titiwai (=Arachnocampa luminosa Skuse, 1890) from New Zealand and Australia

Animals use adhesive secretions in a plethora of ways, either for attachment, egg anchorage, mating or as either active or passive defence. The most interesting function, however, is the use of adhesive threads to capture prey, as the bonding must be performed within milliseconds and under unsuitable conditions (movement of prey, variable environmental conditions, unfavourable attack angle, etc...

Roles of biogenic amines in regulating bioluminescence in the Australian glowworm Arachnocampa flava.

The glowworm Arachnocampa flava is a carnivorous fly larva (Diptera) that uses light to attract prey into its web. The light organ is derived from cells of the Malpighian tubules, representing a bioluminescence system that is unique to the genus. Bioluminescence is modulated through the night although light levels change quite slowly compared with the flashing of the better-known fireflies (Col...
